Science is life. A better life!
The Institute for Fluvial and Marine Systems (IFMS) is committed to a better understanding of the Earth through research, exploration, and education.
IFMS’ mission is to fill the extensive gaps in Earth Science data availability, analyses, and syntheses for Romania and neighboring regions. Focusing on fluvial and marine environments, IFMS strives to provide reliable logistics, innovative results and top-notch research.
IFMS is committed to hight impact in the academia, reliable solutions for the business world, and a better life for communities in the Danube Basin and the Black Sea region.
Exploration for deep knowledge. Research for a better world!
Water means life! Human civilization developed along rivers and thrived near the ocean. Today rivers are economic arteries and oceans connect a globalized world.
Degradation of these environments are endangering biodiversity and human habitation. Understanding the causes of this degradation is key for finding the right solutions. IFMS focuses its research on the fluvial and marine regions in and around Romania to provide such solutions to improve the sustainability of natural resources and a higher quality of life.
Although a young research institute, IFMS already has international visibility. Its young team has more than 10 years experience working in fluvial and marine projects. From monitoring the current dynamics of deltaic coasts with satellite imagery and field measurements, to analyzing historical cartographic data, and modeling future evolution, IFMS employs bathymetric surveys, geomorphological analysis, geological and geophysical expertise, and numerical models to provide solutions for beach erosion, river floods, marine resource exploration, engineering projects and ecological reconstructions.
Economic growth, population increase and technological progress comes with a price to pay. Climate change, sea level rise, reduced biodiversity, and energy needs must be addressed urgently and efficiently using intelligent solutions. IFMS has dedicated its efforts to high impact studies on coastal erosion, river flooding, sediment deficits, climate change, and marine resource exploitation.
IFMS develops intensive courses on modern field and numerical methods in Earth Sciences: drilling and coring, hydrographical imaging using single beam and multibeam systems, sea bed classification using side scan sonar, geophysical imaging with subbottom profiler, resistivity and ground penetrating radar, GIS and remote sensing and numerical modeling.
Invest in research! Invest in a better life!
Water is the most important resource on Earth that makes life possible. As climate change accelerates, monitoring this resource is vital for the planet’s future.
IFMS uses, with its partners’ support, the last generation equipment, data and information management programs to understand, educate and monitor all aspects of water and its interactions with life and society within Danube’s watershed and the Black Sea.
Our work would not be possible without YOUR support! By donating to IFMS you can contribute to new scientific discoveries, increase environmental sustainability, and support research in Romania.
